Green Christians say Restore Nature Now!

Representatives of Green Christian joined a wide range of Christian organisations at the Restore Nature Now march held in London on Saturday (22 June), which was attended by over 60,000 people.

The day started with a packed service at Farm Street Church in central London hosted by A Rocha, the Salvation Army, Christian Climate Action, Operation Noah and Green Christian. A separate Forest Church gathering took place in the church grounds. Those attending then joined the march through central London, which concluded with a rally in Parliament Square.

Tim Cooper, co-founder and Trustee of Green Christian, said: “It was hugely inspiring to see so many Christians demonstrating their love of God’s creation by joining the march. The event should serve as a wake-up call to Christians everywhere. When we voice praise to God for the glory of His creation, we are simultaneously called to address the severe harm being caused to nature by our current lifestyles and priorities.”

ules Robinson, a Green Christian trustee, expressed the passionate feelings of many Christians attending: “I felt overwhelmed by the respect, love and peace for each other and every creature of the earth. Starting off with a wonderful service, the Lord then blessed us with great weather, inspiring and friendly people and joy. I felt His presence in our midst. Despite the plight of nature, the bringing together of so many people creatively expressing themselves and feeling the same passions brought me, personally, renewed hope.”

Mary Andrews, Green Christian member and volunteer, said: “Brilliant to be united with thousands upon thousands of nature lovers, to call for its restoration now, at this amazing, family friendly march!”

Around 350 organisations signed up in support of the day, ranging from long established wildlife organisations to climate change activists. Led by naturalist and television presenter Chris Packham and actor Emma Thompson, speakers at the rally urged stronger political action to tackle the nature and climate crisis based on five demands:

  • Giving a pay-rise for nature
  • Making polluters pay
  • Delivering more space for nature
  • Putting a right to a healthy environment in law
  • Ensuring fair and effective climate action.

Green Christian has long expressed concern at the harm being caused to nature, which has resulted in the loss of many species. Members have pledged to pray and campaign for the protection and restoration of nature, including offering support for the Climate and Nature Bill.
